Additional Major Requirements for TAG
College of Letters & Science

Please note: Detailed major preparation articulation agreements are located at www.assist.org under the "By Major" agreements between UCSB and your community college. Some major preparation courses are required for admission. This information is detailed in the sections below.

It is recommended that any additional major preparation courses be completed prior to transfer. Although these additional courses may not be required for admission, they may be required to complete a pre-major and/or serve as prerequisites to upper-division major requirements. Completion of all major preparation courses is required for graduation.

The following majors require completion of the specified major courses for admission selection and for the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG):

Biological Science majors: Aquatic Biology, Biochemistry-Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Zoology
For admission to the pre-biology major, students must have one year of general chemistry with lab and a complete biology sequence with lab, all with no grade less than C and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7. Also strongly recommended are one year of organic chemistry with lab (especially valuable), one year of general physics with lab and one year of calculus or calculus/statistics.

Business Economics major: Business Economics major: Business Economics, Business Economics with Accounting Concentration
Applicants must complete the following four courses with a 2.75 grade-point average before admission to UCSB: one microeconomics course, one macroeconomics course, one statistics course, and one calculus course.

Economics majors: Economics majors: Economics, Economics-Mathematics
Applicants must complete the following four courses with a 2.75 grade-point average before admission to UCSB: one microeconomics course, one macroeconomics course, and two calculus courses.

Computer Science majors: Computer Science-Computational Biology Emphasis, Computer Science-Computational Economics Emphasis, Computer Science-Computational Geography Emphasis
Applicants to the Computer Science, B.A. must complete the equivalent of the following required UCSB base preparation courses. Strongly recommended UCSB advanced courses are also listed below. Courses for the major taken prior to admission must be completed with no less than a "C" grade.

Required base preparation courses:
  • Math 3A, 3B, 3C, 5A
  • Computer Science 10, 20
  • Computational Biology emphasis: either one year of general chemistry with laboratory or one year of general biology with laboratory (both sequences are required for graduation).
  • Computational Geography emphasis: either one year of general chemistry with laboratory or one year of general physics with laboratory.
  • Computational Economics emphasis: Economics 1, 2 and either one year of general chemistry with laboratory or one year of general physics with laboratory.
Strongly recommended advanced preparation courses:
  • Computer Science 40
  • Math 5B
