Transfer Admission Guarantee Fall 2010
College of Letters & Science

I) General Provisions of the Guarantee:
  1. The following information outlines the UC Santa Barbara Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) for the College of Letters and Science for the fall 2010 term only. This agreement will be reviewed on an annual basis during the spring and reconfirmed for the next academic period.

  2. The Fall 2010 TAG applies to general admission to the College of Letters and Science but not necessarily to a specific major. Some majors in the College of Letters and Science may also require completion of specific major preparation course work. For information about required major preparation course work, please refer to Section II, Number 7 in this document and to the articulation agreements by major between UCSB and your community college online at www.assist.org.

  3. The UCSB TAG does not apply to students with senior class standing (students with 90 or more UC-transferable semester units) from accredited four-year universities and community colleges combined. Applications from senior class standing students will not be accepted.

    1. Students cannot reach senior standing with only community college units completed. A maximum of 70 UC-transferable community college semester units will be accepted toward graduation. Subject credit is awarded for community college units taken beyond 70 semester units.

    2. All UC-transferable units completed at a four-year university apply toward the 90 semester unit limit.

    3. AP and IB units earned prior to high school graduation do not apply to the 90 semester unit limit.

II) Conditions of the Guarantee:

To qualify for the Fall 2010 TAG, you must:
  1. Apply for admission to UCSB during the application filing period for fall 2010 (November 1-30, 2009). There is no additional paperwork to submit to qualify for this agreement.

  2. Complete the required courses in English composition (two courses designated as UC-E on the UC-Transferable Course Agreement) and mathematics (one course designated as UC-M on the UC-Transferable Course Agreement) with C grades or better by the end of fall 2009 for fall 2010 admission.

  3. Complete at least 60 UC-transferable semester units by the end of spring 2010 for fall 2010 admission.

  4. Complete four courses selected from among at least two of the following three areas with C grades or better in each course by the end of spring 2010 for fall 2010 admission:.

    1. Arts and Humanities (designated UC-H on the UC-Transferable Course Agreement)

    2. Behavioral and Social Sciences (UC-B on the UC-Transferable Course Agreement)

    3. Biological and Physical Sciences (UC-S on the UC-Transferable Course Agreement)

    • NOTE: The UC-Transfer Course Agreement is available online at www.assist.org. Consult your counselor concerning credit earned through examinations or other colleges and universities.

  5. Complete the last 30 of your 60 or more UC-transferable semester units in residence at a California community college (you may complete summer session course work at an institution other than a California community college without jeopardizing your residency status).

  6. Earn a minimum GPA of 3.00 in all UC-transferable course work completed by the end of fall 2009 for fall 2010 admission. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.00 through the end of spring 2010.

  7. For the College of Letters and Science TAG, the following majors require completion of specific major preparation course work:

    • Biological Science majors: Aquatic Biology, Biochemistry-Molecular Biology, Biological Sciences, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Zoology

    • Economics majors: Economics and Accounting, Business Economics, Economics, Economics-Mathematics

    • Computer Science majors: Computer Science-Computational Biology Emphasis, Computer Science-Computational Economics Emphasis, Computer Science-Computational Geography Emphasis

Detailed major preparation articulation agreements including the minimum required community college courses can be found at www.assist.org under the "By Major" agreements between UCSB and your community college. Major preparation requirements are subject to change without notice.

Transfer Admission Advising Information

Preparing for your major and meeting selection criteria for specific majors:
This Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) does not apply to: College of Letters and Science-Dance, B.A./B.F.A., Music, B.M., Theater, B.F.A., College of Creative Studies, and College of Engineering. The College of Engineering TAG is available at www.assist.org under the "By Major" agreements between UCSB and your community college.

Please note that the College of Letters and Science expects students to earn their degree without exceeding 200 quarter units. You should select your major carefully and complete as much major preparation as possible prior to transfer.

Pre-Majors:
Certain majors at UCSB require that students complete remaining prerequisite courses with a minimum grade point average at UCSB after transfer to be advanced to full major status. Major preparation articulation agreements (found online at www.assist.org) include detailed information about the pre-major. Students may contact UCSB academic department advisers to discuss their plans to transfer and get more information about the pre-major.

A few words about IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum): California community college transfer students may complete IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) in lieu of the UCSB General Education requirements. Students planning to transfer into high unit majors must be careful to complete lower division major prerequisites if they are to make normal, timely progress through the major. Therefore, students pursuing a high unit major are advised to focus first on major preparation and then either IGETC or UCSB General Education.

While completion of IGETC is not a requirement for admission to UCSB, in order to waive the lower division General Education requirements for graduation from UCSB, IGETC must be completed prior to transfer and you must obtain certification of completion from your community college. If you think you will not complete IGETC prior to transfer, check the articulation agreement for General Education/Breadth online at www.assist.org. There you will find a list of courses that will meet UCSB General Education requirements. UCSB's General Education requirements do not have to be completed prior to transfer.
