Application Tips

Application Tips for Transfer Students

Application Tips

  • Read the instructions carefully prior to filling out the application.

  • Obtain unofficial transcripts from schools you attended in order to fill out the transfer self-reported record section accurately and completely. Do not rely on memory!

  • Fee waivers are available for those who qualify. Learn more on Pathways.

  • Keep a copy of your completed application and personal statement.

Personal Statement
The University of California requires a personal statement as part of the Undergraduate Application for Admission. Transfer applicants will respond to the following questions using a total of 1,000 words.

Prompt #1
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.

Prompt #2
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

For detailed advice, view UCSB's personal statement help sheet.

THE RESULT: An insightful testimonial about you!

Your essay will help us to discover a sense of you as an individual and to envision the contributions you might make to UCSB.

From your essay, we would like to:
  • better understand the circumstances or context in which you have achieved-or not yet fully achieved-your academic potential.

  • know more about your character, your educational values, and your life goals as they relate to your intended area of study.

  • have insight into what you will add to the excellence and diversity of UCSB's entering transfer class.

Allow time to compose and revise your essay, then ask a counselor, teacher, parent, or friend to review it for you. As you finalize your essay, reread it until you are confident it speaks to the points noted above.
