Frequently Asked Questions

26.   What is the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)? Do I need to take it?

All students who enter the University of California as freshmen must demonstrate their command of the English language by fulfilling the Entry Level Writing Requirement (formerly known as Subject A requirement). Students from California high schools who have not satisfied the requirement by April 1 must take the Analytical Writing Placement Examination in mid-May at one of the testing centers throughout the state.

Students who are admitted to the University of California but who have not met the Entry Level Writing Requirement will receive an e-mail or letter directing them to the test center near their home or school. Results of the University-wide Analytical Writing Placement Examination will not affect a student's admission to the University. Those who do not pass the examination in May can still satisfy the Entry Level Writing requirement before enrolling in the University or during their first year at the University.

Enrollment in any English composition course at UCSB is dependent upon the results of this exam, unless UCSB has on record by April 1 that you have met the Entry Level Writing Requirement through one of the following options:
  • You have received a score of 680 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test (Writing section) or a score of 30 on the ACT Combined English/Writing section) or
  • You have received a 3, 4, or 5 on the Advanced Placement Examination in English; or
  • You have received a score of 5 or above on on an International Baccalaureate High-Level English A1 exam; or
  • You have received a score of 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard-Level English A1 exam; or
  • You have completed a transferable college English composition course with a grade of "C" or better.

All students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement by one of the above options are required to take the AWPE before they may enroll in any required writing course at UCSB. For out-of-state students and students unable to take the mid-May exam, the UCSB Writing Program administers the AWPE on campus at the start of the fall term. Pre-registration is not necessary. Those who take the September exam will not be able to enroll in a writing course until winter quarter at the earliest. There is a $65 administration fee payable to the Educational Testing Service. Students must bring a photo ID and a pen. All students must fulfill the AWPE requirement by the end of their third quarter at UCSB.

For information about the next on-campus AWPE, visit the UCSB Writing Program.

If you have any questions regarding the University-wide Analytical Writing Placement Examination, contact UC AWPE at (800) 839-8507, or your high school counselor.
